SOME OF THE BEST PROJECTS THAT HAVE EVER COME OUT OF FDOT, OUT OF THE BROWARD MPO, OUT OF BROWARD COUNTY GOVERNMENT, OUT OF ALL OF OUR CITIES HAVE COME FROM THE PUBLIC AND THE PUBLIC ASKING FOR THESE THINGS. IT'S NOT SOMETHING THAT'S GENERATED TYPICALLY FROM STAFF OR STAFF SERVICES THAT ACTUALLY GENERATE THE BEST PROJECTS.
IT'S THE PUBLIC ACTUALLY ASKING FOR US TO DO SOMETHING FOR THEM.

I ALWAYS GO BACK AND RERUN THE TAPE AND GO, OH, THIS IS REALLY WHAT HAS HAPPENED.
THIS IS WHAT THEY WERE SAYING TO ENSURE THAT, YOU KNOW, WHAT YOU'RE SAYING HERE GETS INTO THE MINDSET.
IT MAY NOT NECESSARILY ULTIMATELY GET BUILT THE WAY WE ALL WANT, BUT THE FACT IS, IS THAT YOU'RE PROVIDING THIS INFORMATION AND IT ACTUALLY DOES GET CONSIDERED. OUR TEAM MEMBERS ARE VERY GOOD ABOUT MAKING SURE THAT THE THINGS THAT YOU SEE KIND OF MOVE FORWARD.
AND THAT SAID, I KIND OF INTERRUPTED THIS BECAUSE THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE PARTS OF THE YEAR FOR US, BECAUSE THESE ARE PROJECTS THAT ARE GRADUATING OUT OF THE TIP AND THAT MEANS THEY'RE ACTUALLY MOVING FORWARD.
SO WHAT YOU'RE ACTUALLY SEEING TODAY ARE PROJECTS THAT ARE GOING TO BE BUILT WITHIN THE NEXT FEW YEARS. BIG FACTORS THAT GO INTO THIS, THIS NEXT FEW YEARS, WE'RE GOING TO BE COMING BACK TO VISIT TO ACTUALLY TALK TO YOU ABOUT PROJECTS THAT WE MIGHT NEED TO MOVE AROUND.
I ALLUDED TO THAT EARLIER THIS LEGISLATIVE SESSION, BROWARD COUNTY ASKED FOR ABOUT $10 MILLION WORTH OF NEW TRANSPORTATION PROJECTS THAT WERE NOT INCLUDED IN OUR TIP PROGRAMS WAS NOT ACTUALLY APPLIED FOR THROUGH THE STANDARDIZED PROCESS. AND UNFORTUNATELY, THOSE PROJECTS ARE GOING TO COME OUT OF OUR BUDGET. LAST COUPLE OF YEARS, THERE WAS SURPLUS MONEY THAT WAS AVAILABLE TO THE STATE OF FLORIDA, AND THEY USED THOSE ADDITIONAL REVENUES TO PAY FOR TRANSPORTATION PROJECTS.
THIS TIME AROUND, IT'S COMING OUT OF THE MPO'S BUDGET, AND WE'RE GOING TO HAVE TO MAKE SOME REALLY HARD DECISIONS FOR FOLKS THAT KNEW BETTER.
AND I HATE TO SAY THIS, YOU KNOW, TEN YEARS AGO, I WENT TO THIS, TO MANY OF THE BOARDS AND I SAID, PLEASE DO NOT ASK FOR MONEY OUT OF TALLAHASSEE BECAUSE IT'S GOING TO TAKE A YEAR OFF OF YOUR PROJECTS. IN THIS PARTICULAR CASE, IT'S NOT JUST A YEAR, IT'S PROBABLY GOING TO BE 3 OR 4 YEARS BECAUSE IT WAS THAT MUCH ADDITIONAL REQUESTS THAT WEREN'T BUDGETED.
OUR PARTNERS OVER AT THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION, YOU KNOW, THEY'RE BUSY BALANCING TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT WORK PROGRAM, WHAT PROJECTS TO GO FORWARD AND WHICH ONES NOT.
AND THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THERE'S THESE EARMARK REQUESTS.
AND THOSE EARMARK REQUESTS HAVE TO BE FUNDED.
BECAUSE IF THE GOVERNOR DOES NOT VETO THEM, THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN YOU HAVE A WHOLE DIFFERENT WORLD THAT WE'RE GOING TO HAVE TO BE DEALING WITH. BILL WILL BE PRESENTING THIS STUFF TO YOU WITH JIHONG AND OUR OTHER TEAM MEMBERS.
I'M AVAILABLE TO YOU. YOU CAN EMAIL ME, YOU CAN CALL ME HOWEVER YOU WANT TO COMMUNICATE, BUT THIS IS GOING TO BE A HECK OF A YEAR TO WATCH THIS.

THIS THIS TIME AROUND, THERE'S A LOT OF DIRECT REQUESTS FROM LOCAL GOVERNMENTS THAT ARE GOING INTO THE TRANSPORTATION REAUTHORIZATION BILL.
YOU KNOW, THERE'S SOME THINGS THAT ARE GOOD. SOME THINGS ARE BAD. YOU KNOW, IT'S A FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. BUT, YOU KNOW, THERE IS THE REALITY THAT WE'RE GOING TO BE FACING A DIFFERENT TYPE OF FUNDING CYCLE AS WELL.
WE ACTUALLY HAD A REALLY GOOD FIVE YEAR RUN WITH A LOT OF MONEY PROGRAMED.
THAT A BUNCH OF IT DIDN'T ACTUALLY GET SPENT BECAUSE THERE JUST WASN'T ENOUGH STAFFING IN WASHINGTON TO PROCESS THE GRANTS THAT WERE AVAILABLE.
WE, WE DID REALLY WELL AROUND 40, $50 MILLION WORTH OF DISCRETIONARY GRANTS HERE AT THE BROWARD MPO AND SOME OF OUR PARTNER GOVERNMENTS ALSO RECEIVED DIRECT FUNDING GRANTS, WHICH HAS BEEN GREAT.
THAT SAID, I DON'T KNOW IF WE'RE GOING TO HAVE THAT AGAIN IN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS.
SO YOU'RE GOING TO SEE SOME VARIATION MOVING AROUND OVER THERE AT THAT OTHER SIDE.
THERE YOU GO. DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT.
FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO DON'T KNOW WHO I AM, I ACTUALLY RUN THE MPO.

SO THAT QUOTE UNQUOTE, IF YOU MAINTAINED A CERTAIN SPEED, THE LIGHTS WOULD ALL BE SEQUENCED WHERE, YOU KNOW, IT'S ALL GREEN, ETC. IS DO YOU THINK THIS IS PART OF THAT? IT COULD BE A PART OF IT AND SUPPORTIVE TO THAT.
HOWEVER IF YOU BELIEVE THAT YOU'LL BE ABLE TO DRIVE FROM ONE END OF THE COUNTY TO THE OTHER AND GET NOTHING BUT GREEN LIGHTS.
